Introductions and Initial Thoughts
Our opening discussion on voice.
Lesson One: What Is Voice Made Of?
The building blocks, broken into components you can point at on a page: word choice, sentence rhythm, syntax, narrative distance, and more. We analyze writing to uncover the “voice choices” within in order to learn how voice is deliberately constructed.
Exercise One: Voice Profile
You'll analyze your initial writing exercise for underlying “voice choices”, then rewrite the piece making choices deliberately rather than by default.
Lunch
On site, provided.
Lesson Two: How Is Voice Conveyed?
Consistency, control, and techniques for maintaining voice across an entire project.
Exercise Two: Borrowed Voice
You'll choose a sample passage and keep writing where it leaves off, matching its voice as closely as you can.
Workshop
Small groups. You'll read each other's pieces and analyze them for “voice choices.”
Exercise Three: A Voice of Your Own
A final prompt, in your own voice, using everything you’ve learned to keep the choices deliberate and consistent across the whole piece.
